Homenaje a México
Recital series and Los Angeles tour • March – May 2019
Inspired by their week-long residency at UNAM’s Facultad de Música in Mexico City last winter, AWQ created an eclectic series of performances paying tribute to the works of living Mexican composers and the extraordinary chamber music scene of Mexico’s cosmopolitan capital city. With the assistance of our new friends and colleagues from UNAM, AWQ programmed music that is rarely performed in the US. In the process, we succeeded in forging lasting ties with several Mexican composers on both sides of the border.
Our recital performances highlighted works by Ana Lara, Arturo Márquez, Federico Ibarra, Charly Daniels, and José-Luis Hurtado. A tour week in LA was presented in association with UNAM Los Angeles and organized by AWQ members Johanna Lundy and Marissa Olegario.
While on tour in LA, AWQ engaged in a number of master classes and interactive community events. Our concert in the gallery space at the Centro Cultural Cinematográfico México at the city’s Mexican Consulate was warmly received by a diverse audience. We taught both individual and chamber music master classes at UCLA, Pasadena Conservatory, and LACHSA.
At College of the Canyons, we had the pleasure of reading student works for wind quintet from the composition class of Dr. Bernardo Feldman, chair of the Music Department and himself a composer of Mexican heritage. We were privileged to represent the University of Arizona as we visited some of the premiere high school music programs in LA, including Diamond Bar and Arcadia High Schools. AWQ is grateful for the support of the College of Fine Arts and the Fred Fox School of Music, which made this project possible.
